Winter Roof Maintenance Tips Every Homeowner Should Know

Protecting Your Roof This Winter

Winter is the harshest season for your roof. Snow, ice, freezing temperatures, and winter storms can cause significant damage if your roof isn't properly prepared. Here's a practical guide to winter roof maintenance.

Pre-Winter Inspection Checklist

Before winter arrives, inspect (or have a professional inspect) these areas:

From the Ground:

  • Look for missing, cracked, or curling shingles
  • Check for visible sagging in the roofline
  • Inspect gutters for damage or separation from the roof edge
  • Look for moss or algae growth (indicates moisture retention)

In the Attic:

  • Check for daylight coming through the roof boards
  • Look for water stains on the underside of the roof deck
  • Feel for dampness or notice musty odors
  • Verify insulation is adequate and evenly distributed
  • Ensure attic vents are clear and functioning

Essential Winter Maintenance Tasks

1. Clean Your Gutters

This is arguably the most important pre-winter task. Clogged gutters cause water to back up under shingles, leading to leaks and ice dams. Remove all leaves, debris, and sediment. Ensure downspouts are directing water away from your foundation.

2. Trim Overhanging Branches

Heavy snow and ice can cause branches to break and fall on your roof. Trim any branches within 6 feet of your roof. This also reduces leaf accumulation and discourages animals from accessing your roof.

3. Check and Repair Flashing

Flashing around chimneys, vents, skylights, and roof edges is a common leak source. Check for gaps, rust, or lifted edges. Repair or replace damaged flashing before winter arrives.

4. Ensure Proper Attic Insulation

Inadequate insulation lets heat escape through the roof, causing snow to melt unevenly and refreeze at the eaves (ice dams). Your attic should have R-38 to R-60 insulation depending on your climate zone.

5. Improve Attic Ventilation

Proper ventilation keeps the attic temperature close to outside temperature, preventing ice dam formation. Ensure soffit vents, ridge vents, and gable vents are unobstructed.

Dealing with Ice Dams

Ice dams form when heat escaping from your attic melts snow on the upper roof, which refreezes at the colder eaves, creating a dam that traps water.

Prevention:

  • Improve attic insulation and ventilation (the root cause)
  • Install ice and water shield membrane along eaves during your next reroof
  • Consider heated roof cables for problem areas

Emergency Treatment:

  • Use a roof rake to carefully remove snow from the first 3-4 feet of roof edge
  • Never use rock salt or calcium chloride directly on roofing materials
  • Use ice melt socks (pantyhose filled with ice melt) placed perpendicular to the ice dam

When to Call a Professional

Call a roofing professional if you notice:

  • Active leaks during or after storms
  • Significant ice dam formation
  • Large areas of missing shingles after a storm
  • Sagging or structural concerns
  • Heavy snow accumulation (over 2 feet, depending on roof type)

Snow Load Safety

Most residential roofs can handle 20-40 pounds per square foot. Fresh snow weighs about 5 lbs/sq ft, but packed snow can reach 20 lbs/sq ft, and ice can reach 57 lbs/sq ft. If you're concerned about snow load, have a professional assess your roof's capacity.

Spring Follow-Up

Once winter ends, schedule a professional inspection to check for:

  • Storm damage you may not see from the ground
  • Lifted or damaged flashing
  • Shingle granule loss
  • Gutter damage from ice

Plan Ahead

Don't wait until the first snowfall to think about your roof. Schedule an inspection and any needed repairs well before winter. On Win My Work, you can connect with verified roofing contractors in your area who can assess your roof's winter readiness and handle any repairs needed to keep your home protected all season.
