A rough rule many technicians use is to weigh the repair cost against the age of the equipment: if the repair approaches a substantial fraction of replacement cost on a system already well into its expected life, replacement usually wins. Beyond that arithmetic, consider whether repairs are becoming frequent, whether the system uses a refrigerant that is being phased out and therefore getting expensive, and how much your energy bills would fall with modern equipment. A single repair on a well-maintained ten-year-old system is normally worth doing. A third repair in two years on a system approaching the end of its life is usually money spent to delay a decision you have already made.
